The Lepidopterist’s Observatory creates a new piece of lightweight jungle infrastructure that allows entomologists to reach the rainforest’s tree tops and observe butterfly and moth migrations, migratory habits and patterns.
The observation platform uses an exuberantly coloured mast-like primary structure at its core and two lightweight secondary orbital arms to catch insects with net systems controlled by mainsheet ropes and pulleys. The technology provides shade, shelter and a temporary laboratory for up to two people. The research site has minimal impact on the surrounding environment both at ground and tree level and can be sustainably sourced, built and disposed post research.
